Sony a7iii Accessories

The Best Sony a7iii Accessories

The Sony a7iii is one of the best “hybrid” shooter cameras on the market, as it can shoot both exceptional photos and videos. Some of the a7iii’s most attractive qualities include: excellent full frame sensor, great low-light capabilities, strong autofocus performance, and very good video specs. Technically, the a7iii is considered part of Sony’s “basic” model cameras, but since the introduction of this camera, Sony has lived up to its promise of redefining what it means to be “basic”. This full frame mirrorless camera features a 24.2 megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, as well as a 93% autofocus coverage, in-body image stabilization, 10 fps continuous shooting, and 4K video recording across the full width of the full-frame image sensor. The Sony a7iii is a household favorite here in the PolarPro offices and our go-to camera when we’re out on location. When we are out on our photography adventures however, there is more than just our camera that we need to bring with us in order to take epic footage.

1. Keep Your Camera Protected

After investing in your new Sony a7iii, it is an imperative need to want to protect it to the best of your ability. In order to do so, we recommend the Easycover Silicone Protection Cover for your Sony a7iii. It effortlessly protects your camera from bumps and scratches, provides a secure grip, and offers a slim design and smooth texture from its custom-fit silicone material. Of course there are a lot of third party cases out there on the market, but for us we love the durability and accessibility the Easycover has to offer.

Protecting the rear screen on your Sony a7iii is also a must when it comes to maintaining the pristine condition of your camera. Like your phone screen, it can be frustrating when an unwanted scratch or scrape appears on your touch screen and the best way to avoid this issue is by putting a glass screen protector over your rear screen. Sony camera screens are notorious for bubbles forming around the edges underneath your screen, luckily there is a Sony a7iii accessory that we recommend to help mend this issue. The ExpertShield Glass Screen Protector is the perfect Sony a7iii accessory, as it diminishes the worry of your glass screen bubbling up under your screen protector. Since the Sony a7iii is a touch screen, the performance quality can get degraded rather quickly if the proper protection is not used on it. As a result, the ExpertShield Glass Screen Protector works amazing, since it does not interfere with your touch screen functionality and also has a lifetime warranty.

In addition to protecting your touch screen, a solid cover for your lens is imperative to defending against unwanted damage. Our PolarPro Lens Defender was designed to be the protective first line of defense against dirt, moisture, and minor collisions. Our Defender- Lens Cover is compatible with most professional lenses on the market, and has a dual-density construction which combines a hard, rigid lens plate and an easy to install flexible polymer exterior. Our custom engineered construction ensures a snug and secure fit compared to those standard plastic lens caps and flimsy universal lens covers.

2. Microphone

Sony cameras are known for their video capabilities, and the a7iii is no different. The Sony a7iii is the perfect hybrid camera, which we previously named as one of our favorite mirrorless vlogging cameras. In order to vlog, you must have the proper set up and a good microphone is an absolute must, as well as one of our favorite Sony a7iii accessories. RODE is one of the leading competitors in the portable external microphone industry. Our favorite model of theirs for vlogging is the VideoMic Pro, which is a professional grade shotgun microphone. This external mic is battery powered, making it an easy addition to your vlogging setup without having to worry about unnecessary cables. It also includes a good shock mount to lessen the noise from the camera, when it is attached to one. The RODE VideoMic Pro, is what we think the perfect microphone would be for the vlogger that is constantly in transit or traveling.

3. Memory Cards and Slate Case

The best memory cards for the Sony a7iii is the Sony SF-G UHS-II 64GB, which have a 299 MB/s write speed and a 300 MB/s read speed. Known as the ‘world’s fastest SD card’, the Sony SF-G series is designed for the creator that wants to record 4K video or shoot stills in a continuous sequence of high-resolution images. In addition to their incredible speed, the SF-G cards are temperament resistant, X-ray proof, shock proof, and waterproof. Since the Sony a7iii has two memory card slots, we recommend picking up a few extra of these cards to make sure you never run into an issue for storing your content when out on location.

Since it is more than likely that you will be bringing multiple SD cards with you on location, you will definitely need something to hold them all so they don’t get lost in the bottom of your camera bag. Luckily, the next option on our list of Sony a7iii accessories will mend this issue of disorganization. Our Slate Memory Card case is the perfect solution for carrying your SD memory cards, and depending on which model you decide to get can hold anywhere from 12 to 24 memory cards. With the Slate Memory Card Case’s cast-aluminum design, it will be sure to protect your saved content through the most rugged of conditions. In the SD Edition of our Slate Case you can store up to 24 cards, 16 MicroSD and 8 StandardSD; whereas in the QXD Edition stores up to 12 memory cards which include, 4 QXD,  4 StandardSD, and 4 MicroSD. The Slate Memory Card case can inspire creativity when using your Sony a7iii. For instance, when empty, Slate is a blank palette to begin creating your content upon; however, when full, Slate offers peace of mind, knowing the content you have captured is compiled in a premium safe, single location.

4. SmallRig Camera Cage Kit

Another vital Sony a7iii accessory is a SmallRig Camera Cage Kit. This rig is designed specifically for both the Sony a7iii and Sony a7Riii cameras, and includes 4 parts: Double End Ball Head 1135, a7Riii Cage 2087, Safety Rail 1409, and NATO Handle 1955. This SmallRig model is made to be used with ease as the Cage 2087, does not block any access to the battery compartment, ports, and slots of the camera, and additionally comes with multiple threaded holes for external mountings. For example, this rig would make it extremely easy for you to attach your RODE external microphone, or even attach a monitor to execute your next videography project. Many content creators currently use their a7iii to turn it into a mini cinematic rig, and with the help of the SmallRig Camera Cage Kit you can be a legit cinematographer in no time.

5.  Camera Filters

To round out our list for the best Sony a7iii accessories, is of course filters for your camera. Filters are an essential part of enhancing your creativity within your workflow. For instance, filters allow you to properly expose your images within bright environments by limiting the amount of light that is able to reach your camera’s sensor. At PolarPro, we believe that having high-quality filters is an essential addition to any photographer’s camera bag. QuartzLine filters are a quintessential accessory for your new Sony a7iii, which are made of fused quartz glass and built to withstand the harshest of conditions. With these filters rugged construction, they can prove to be a beneficial part of your workflow due to their optically pristine properties. In addition, QuartzLine filters have the ability to resolve up to 100 megapixels which means that each of the Sony a7iii’s 24.2 megapixels will be captured with effortless clarity. The QuartzLine collection is offered in various filter types, and have the ability to block anywhere between 3 and 16 stops of light. Additionally, these filters will also help enhance your footage to make it look more professional and cinematic.

There are multiple types of filters, such as: CP, UV, ND, and ND/PL. Each type of filter is used for a different purpose, and when deciding on which one to take on your next photography project it is good to know which each filter type is used for.

CP: A CP, or circular polarizing filter, allows you to capture vividness and contrast in an image. These polarizing characteristics do not only enhance the colors of your image, but also reduce glares and reflections within your photo or video.

UV: When shooting outside, UV can affect the image quality in a variety of ways. For example, UV light manifests itself in the form of haze-- this haze can rob image’s detail, especially at longer distances with longer focal lengths. As a result, the cumulative haze densities can greatly soften the sharp details of distant images. It is greatly debated amongst photographers if they actually provide a benefit to their workflow, but in our opinion it never hurts to have an extra line of defense against potential damage.

ND: A ND filter, or neutral density filter, is used to limit the amount of light that is able to reach your camera’s sensor. As a result, these filters allow you to control the exposure in your image very easily and prevent you from having to over extend the use of your cameras settings, like ISO, aperture, or white balance. ND filters also help keep the shutter open longer on your camera, and achieve long exposure shots, the milky effect of water, and also show the movement of clouds in the sky.

ND/PL: A ND/PL filter combines the features of two popular filter types, a neutral density and circular polarizing filters. These filters are used to achieve smooth, flushed out photos or videos at slower shutter speeds with improved contrast and color saturation. Unlike straight ND filters that usually have a neutral color profile, ND/PL filters provide more color saturation due to the polarization effect.

Another type of filter is a variable neutral density filter, or a VND. A VND is a type of ND filter that combines multiple filters into one. For example, instead of only being able to capture 3 stops of light with one ND filter, you can capture a range of stops by physically rotating the filter to control the amount of light that is let in. In other words, a variable ND filter combines multiple filter elements into one and eliminates the hassle of carrying numerous filters with you while out on location. Here at PolarPro, we teamed up with one of the biggest creators in the industry, Peter McKinnon, to engineer the highest quality VND filter on the market. Much like our QuartzLine filters, the Peter McKinnon Variable ND filter is made of our quartz glass technology which allows for increased durability and a reliable Sony a7iii accessory on any rugged adventure. Our Peter McKinnon Variable ND filter is available in both 2-5 and 6-9 stop options, making it easy for you to adapt to any outdoor environment.
